Your Voices, Your Stories, African Voices Radio Launches on DAB in South Yorkshire!

Sheffield, South Yorkshire – 1 April 2025

On 1st April, we proudly brought a fresh and authentic voice to the airwaves of South Yorkshire. We at African Voices Platform are thrilled to unveil our DAB radio station, African Voices Radio—a project that brings our stories, music, and ideas from African and African diaspora communities right into your homes.

This momentous occasion marks a significant step forward in ensuring our stories are told by us, for us.

For many in our community, the journey began back in 2018 on Sheffield Live. Remember the sting of those dismissive comments made about Haiti and Africa? It was from that very moment that AVP emerged initially as a TV show that has now grown to air on SheffieldLive TV twice a week on Wednesadys and Sundays as a powerful response and a commitment to shaping our own narratives.

Since then, AVP has been a steadfast presence, working tirelessly to create a platform where the rich tapestry of our cultures, experiences, and perspectives can be shared and celebrated. The granting of a community radio license by Ofcom in 2023 was a landmark achievement, paving the way for this exciting new chapter.

Last August, Sheffield City Council further demonstrated its support by awarding AVP the crucial Cultural Pipeline Fund. This vital investment has been instrumental in laying the groundwork for African Voices Radio, enabling the development of a robust business plan and the establishment of a professional broadcasting setup through training and strategising on a fundraising strategy .

The vision for African Voices Radio is clear: to be your media platform. A space where we can delve into the issues that matter most to our communities, share our unique perspectives, and challenge mainstream narratives. It’s about celebrating our heritage, fostering understanding, and building stronger connections within South Yorkshire’s diverse landscape.

But African Voices Radio is more than just talking. It’s a platform dedicated to nurturing local talent. The station will be a vital springboard for the wealth of creative individuals within our communities, providing opportunities to showcase their music, art, and stories.

Furthermore, AVP is deeply committed to making a tangible difference in the lives of young people in South Yorkshire. By actively engaging the youth, providing positive outlets, and amplifying their voices, African Voices Radio aims to play a crucial role in reducing knife and gun crime in the region.

The energy and enthusiasm surrounding the launch are palpable. In November and December of last year, AVP successfully trained a dedicated cohort of volunteers, many of whom are now poised to launch their very own shows on the new station. This grassroots approach ensures that the content truly reflects the interests and passions of our community.
